She may not have released an album in 17 years, but Ms Lauryn Hill is still one of the most important artists around right now. She spits lyrics that are angry – but meaningful. Hill slay with her brilliant stream-of-conscious style rap. This seven-and-a-half minute epic sees the incomparable Ms. But a new song from Ms Lauryn Hill in which she heavily samples the great Nina Simone is certainly up there. There are few things better than a new song from Ms. Ms Lauryn Hill – 'I've Got Life (Version)' Schnapf has produced plenty of great records, but it's his work with Elliott Smith ( Either Or, XO, Figure 8) that makes us think he's an excellent choice to join Team Vile. It's great to see Vile working with Rob Schnapf on his new record b'lieve i'm goin' down. This works particularly well given the lyrics are brilliant Vile sings about being disconnected from oneself, a serious concern, with a little wry humour. His vocal is reminiscent of the way Isaac Brock's vocal propels the music of Modest Mouse. His tuneful ramble is as notable for its rhythm as it is for its melody. Yes, this is one of the finest Kurt Vile songs ever. He's not changing much about his approach to songwriting in 'Pretty Pimpin'', except for the fact that he's getting better. Kurt Vile has gone from obscure stoned genius to almost mainstream folk hero in just a few short years. The best songs of the week, added to the Double J playlist.
